Couple Therapy
Your relationship is complex, so a couple therapist should practice a specific method of working with couples. At Cardiff Couple therapy I use the Gottman method. Developed by American Psychologists John and Julie Gottman, it is a research-based method, tested out through decades of clinical practice since 1984. Its foundational theory is “The Sound Relationship House “, which guides appropriate interventions
The Gottman method is applicable to relationships where affairs, trauma, situational domestic abuse, and addiction are features of conflict.
Emotional regulation
Are negative emotions running high in your relationship? Emotional dysregulation generates and maintains high conflict in couples. Many neurodiverse individuals struggle with emotional regulation. Biofeedback is a powerful and effective method to increase capacity to regulate emotions. Biofeedback gives a window to understand what is happening inside our physiology. It makes clearer the connection of body and and mind ,shifting from reacting to stressful situations, to responding instead.
At Cardiff Couples Therapy we use HEARMATH biofeedback techniques and technology. HEARTMATH technology such as the Emwave Pro Plus gives feedback on physiological responses to conflict or stress. HEARTMATH techniques support the development of self-regulation and emotional management skills. I am a certified HEARTMATH practitioner .
Coaching
The coaching method at Cardiff Couples Therapy is strength based. Neurodiverse individuals have strengths which they can bring to relationships. Working with strengths and addressing limitations through a coaching plan supports incremental improvements, which increases confidence and supports couple interventions.
Anger Management
Anger is a combination of emotion dysregulation, problematic behavioural patterns, and attitudes of hostility. Assessment reveals the area that requires the most immediate attention for success in changing and managing attitudes, emotions and behaviour. HEARTMATH techniques are effective in managing anger.
